Van Damme Gets Ready To Captain A Submarine

I know we talking almost 40 years ago, but do you remember a time when Jean-Claude Van Damme could throw a spinning kick through a brick wall, split between two trucks, and somehow still look like the coolest man alive while doing it. He basically owned muscle mania in the late ’80s and ’90s which practically ran on his slow-motion roundhouse kicks. Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Timecop… these were not just action movies. They were VHS-era rituals. The kind of films that smelled like popcorn, arcade machines, and pure testosterone-fuelled chaos.

Van Damme Heads Into World War II

I know it’s difficult to imagine especially considering how much of time has passed, but Van Damme is heading back into battle again. The difference is that this time, the battlefield is not some underground martial arts tournament or a collapsing sports arena. It is World War II. According to Variety, Van Damme has officially signed on to star in Raid Pacific, a new WWII action epic from director Steven Luke and producer Dean Bloxom. I am keen to see if this role fits the older, weathered version of Van Damme. And he may just surprise us all.

A Submarine Mission With Impossible Odds

The scene is reportedly set in the tense aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Van Damme plays Captain William Pierce, a submarine commander tasked with leading a dangerous mission deep inside enemy territory. He has to steer a war vessel through the Pacific while trying to survive the impossible odds stacked against him. Now let’s be real, I don’t think that there is anybody out there that is expecting Van Damme to suddenly transform into some Oscar-chasing prestige actor. But I can almost guarantee you that people will show up because nostalgia pulls them in. Also this is about seeing one of the last remaining old-school action stars still charging forward while Hollywood keeps drowning itself in CGI sludge and recycled franchise soup.

Age Has Changed The Action Hero Formula

Director Steven Luke has already built a reputation around military-focused stories, and the film itself appears to lean heavily into tension, survival, and wartime pressure rather than cartoonish action spectacle. That could work massively in Van Damme’s favour. It’s interesting how age changes action stars. It strips away the invincible aura and replaces it with weariness, scars, and presence. This is what makes them more interesting to watch. And by the looks of it, Raid Pacific sounds like it’s bringing a little more grit to the cinematic world.

    Why Nostalgia Still Works

I don’t think that anybody in their wildest dreams thought that Van Damme would play the role of a submarine captain. The man who once spent entire movies kicking people through windows will now navigate a claustrophobic steel vessel beneath the ocean during one of history’s darkest wars. Now that’s the kind of evolution that grabs attention. If you are like me and grew up during the peak action-movie era, I’m sure that there is probably a small nostalgic part of your brain smiling at this news already. Look, whether people admit it or not, these old-school action icons still carry something most modern blockbuster stars often struggle with. Identity. You instantly know what kind of energy they bring onto the screen. Van Damme always carried this strange combination of intensity, vulnerability, and absolute absurdity. One minute he looked like a human weapon. The next minute he looked emotionally exhausted by life itself.

Maybe that is why he still lasts.

Raid Pacific is currently launching sales at Cannes through VMI Worldwide, with production details continuing to emerge.
