The perfect way to beat the winter blues, and enjoy the school holidays, is to cosy up with your besties, loved ones or family for a few hours in the darkened excitement of a cinema, to watch the return of a classic movie. And, with the ticket price at just R50, Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema offering should be a regular event in your diary!

July’s Throwback Cinema line-up promises even more hours of movie magic on the big screen with animation and comedy, epic adventures and musicals. Stuart Little screens for a second week from 03 July, while the magical musical, Annie, releases on 10 July for two weeks. The final week, from 24 July, sees the release of the second film in The Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which will also screen for two weeks.

“Our Throwback Cinema titles continue to perform well and are proving to be a very popular option to watch some classic movies again on the big screen. The July line-up includes some wonderful holiday fare for our younger audiences including the delightful Annie, and the second film in The Hobbit trilogy, which is performing well. In addition, a true classic from the 1930s continues its run at Rosebank Nouveau in Joburg. Featuring big Hollywood stars, we are sure our audiences will enjoy all of them, either as repeat viewing or a first-time cinema experience,” says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer at Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

Still playing during the first two weeks of July in the school holidays is the sweet story of a little mouse called Stuart Little, first released back in 1999. When the Little family first adopts Stuart the mouse, their son George is initially unwelcoming to his new brother, while the family cat, Snowbell, is even less enthusiastic. Stuart resolves to face these difficulties with as much pluck and courage as his little self can muster. Directed by Rob Minkoff, the film stars Geena Davis, Michael J Fox (who voices Stuart Little), Hugh Laurie, Jonathan Lipnicki, and Nathan Lane (Snowbell’s voice).

The delightful 1982 coming-of-age musical, Annie, sings its way back onto the big screen on 10 July for a two-week run. An orphan in a facility run by the mean Miss Hannigan, Annie believes that her parents left her there by mistake. When a rich man named Oliver ‘Daddy’ Warbucks decides to let an orphan live at his home to promote his image, Annie is selected. While Annie gets accustomed to living in Warbucks’ mansion, she still longs to meet her parents. So Warbucks announces a search for them and a reward, which brings out many frauds. Directed by John Huston, the film stars Aileen Quinn as Annie, Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks, and also stars Carol Burnett, Ann Reinking, Tim Curry, Bernadette Peters, and Geoffrey Holder. The sun’ll come out tomorrow, so you gotta hang on till tomorrow…

The Hobbit fans, new and old, are in for a treat with the release of the final two films of the trilogy during July and August. From 24 July for two weeks, fans can relive all the action of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug; and from 14 August, for two weeks, the third title, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five

    Armies, concludes the trilogy.

The 2013 fantasy epic drama, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, based on the classic novel by renowned South African author, JRR Tolkien, releases on 24 July for two weeks. Audiences are invited to re-experience the magic of Middle Earth as Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema brings this classic film as part of the trilogy back to the big screen.

The Dwarves, Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey have successfully escaped the Misty Mountains, and Bilbo has gained the One Ring. They all continue their quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain, their homeland, from the dragon Smaug. Directed by Peter Jackson, the film stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Ian McKellen as Gandalf, together with an all-star cast including Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, Orlando Bloom and James Nesbitt.

At Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg, cinemagoers can enjoy the timeless American classic from 1939, Gone with the Wind, for the first two weeks in July. Based on the Margaret Mitchell novel, the film follows a sheltered and manipulative Southern belle, Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh), and a roguish profiteer, Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), who face off in a turbulent romance as the society around them crumbles with the end of slavery and is rebuilt during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods. The winner of eight Oscars in 1940, the film was directed by Victor Fleming and also stars Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Hattie McDaniel, Butterfly McQueen, Thomas Mitchell, Barbara O’Neil, Alicia Rhett and Howard Hickman.

Throwback Cinema titles are screened at the following Ster-Kinekor sites: Sandton, Mall of Africa, Cedar Square, Eastgate, Cresta and Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg; Brooklyn, Irene and The Grove in Tshwane; Vaal in Vanderbijlpark; MooiRiver Mall in Potchefstroom; Watercrest Mall in Waterfall, KZN; Baywest in Gqeberha; Somerset Mall in Somerset West; and Blue Route, V&A Waterfront, and Capegate in Cape Town, giving more movie fans the opportunity to enjoy July’s great line-up of classic films.
