Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett expresses deep concern over the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, highlighting the risks of job displacement, misinformation, and the erosion of trust in a world increasingly reliant on AI-generated content.

Cate Blanchett, the Australian actress who has won two Oscars for her roles in The Aviator and Blue Jasmine, has voiced her feelings about AI. She told Laura Kuenssberg of the BBC  that, she is “deeply concerned” about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI). “I’m looking at these robots and driverless cars and I don’t really know what that’s bringing anybody”, stated Blanchett.

Her views unfolded during her promotion of her new film “Rumours”, an apocalyptic comedy about a group of world leaders trapped in a forest. In Rumours, Blanchett plays the Chancellor of Germany who hosts a G7 summit for other world leaders. A flim that according to the actress looks like a sweet little documentary compared to what’s going on in the world.

Blanchett is less concerned about her job safety as she believes that the average man is at more of a threat with the advancements of AI. “Forget whether they’re an actor or not, if you’ve recorded yourself for three or four seconds your voice can be replicated”, remarked Blanchett. All this being true with AI voice cloning, also known as voice synthesis or voice mimicry. The technology that uses machine learning to simulate a specific person’s voice. Which can be used in almost any senario, for any purpose.

We have recently seen celebrities such as David Attenborough being among famous people whose voices have been exploited by fraudsters. David Attenborough described himself as “profoundly disturbed” to have discovered that his cloned voice had been used to deliver partisan US news bulletins reported thegurdian at the time of the disturbing event.

Blanchette has said that, “When you look at it one way it’s creativity, but it’s also incredibly destructive, which of course is the other side of it.” And quiet rightly so. The concerns of the actress highlight complex and multifaceted nature of this technology. We are exposed on adaily bais to the incredible potential of creativity and innovation, but let’s not loose sight of the risks that are associated with the advancement of AI. The risk of job displacements, the spread of misinformation, and the erosion of trust in what we see and hear are very real and demand our attention.

As AI continues to advance, it is crucial that we engage in thoughtful discussions about its ethical implications and work towards developing safeguards that protect against its potential harms. Blanchett’s voice adds to a growing chorus of experts and public figures urging caution and careful consideration as we navigate the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.

After 28 years in corporate life, I swapped spreadsheets for screenplays and now write movie reviews and celebrity articles for Geekhub. It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
