Why I backtracked and got the iPhone 16 Pro Max

So here’s my confession guys, just a few months ago I was like “Don’t upgrade to the iPhone 16, it’s not worth it!” I even wrote an article about it encouraging people to stick with their current iPhones, particularly if their phones were just a year or two old. It seemed like a no-brainer—why spend thousands on a device that didn’t offer much of an improvement? iPhone 16: A New Low in High-Tech Disappointment

And guess what? Here I am, 2 months later owning an iPhone 16 Pro Max. Yes, I know! I can already hear the collective gasp from all of you, and trust me, the irony is not lost on me.

So, how did I go from “save your money, this upgrade is a yawn” to shelling out for the very phone I said I wouldn’t get? Well, let’s just say it was a perfect storm of battery frustration and a killer trade-in deal.

The Battery Life Struggle

Let me start by saying this: I still don’t think the iPhone 16 Pro Max was a necessary upgrade for most people. If you’ve got an iPhone 15 or even an iPhone 14, you’re still rocking some excellent tech. So why did I cave?

Here’s the thing—I’m a technology writer and content creator. My iPhone is more than just a phone; it’s been a tool and a vital extension of my workflow. My daily tasks include capturing videos, editing photos, writing articles, and managing my social media presence. And while the iPhone 15 Pro served me well in these areas, its battery started to buckle under the weight of my demands. Between running demanding apps, video calls, heavy media usage, and constant screen time, I was finding myself tethered to my charger more often than I would have liked. I had to carry a power bank everywhere, which, as any tech enthusiast will tell you, is just an extra hassle.

When the iPhone 16 Pro Max was released, I was cautiously optimistic that the battery improvements would make a difference. Apple claims that the 16 Pro Max has up to 29 hours of video playback, which sounded like the dream for someone like me who needs long-lasting power. And, to be honest, I had gotten to a point where battery life was the most important thing in a phone upgrade. Performance and camera features were still great, but I didn’t need the incremental camera improvements or flashy new buttons. I needed something that could keep up with my workload without forcing me to scramble for a charger every few hours. For me, the iPhone 16 Pro Max solved a real problem. It wasn’t about fancy new features that made it a game-changer—it was the battery life that made my life easier.

Okay, so I’m admitting that I backtracked, and it is extremely important for me to be honest with my readers and therefore I decided to put out this article explaining my madness . As I’ve covered in much detail, the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s battery was a big factor in my decision, but here’s where it gets a bit more interesting: the iStore Trade-In Program. 

iStore has had a trade-in program for ages, I just didn’t know how good it was. Not until a recent trip with my friend Faizel Patel from the Citizen, who told me about the great deal he got on his trade-in at iStore and why upgrading was an absolute no-brainer – I wanted to check it out for myself. When I plugged my iPhone 15 Pro into the trade-in calculator, I was pretty much floored by how much I could get for it. I won’t lie, I felt like I was getting away with something.Suddenly, the idea of upgrading didn’t seem as financially daunting as it once had.

I ended up paying just one 3rd  on the price of the iPhone 16 Pro Max by trading in my iPhone 15 Pro. Here’s the breakdown:

Just 10k for a brand new iPhone 16 Pro Max, including iCare plus valued at R1,999. That’s a huge discount in the world of flagship smartphones, which  made the decision a lot more tempting. I didn’t feel like I was just throwing money away for a few extra hours of battery life; it felt more like an opportunity to trade up without breaking the bank.

In the end, the math worked out. The trade-in gave me enough of a financial cushion to justify the upgrade, and the improved battery life promised to make my day-to-day much more efficient. My workflow would become smoother, and I’d be able to work longer hours without worrying about finding an outlet.

Was the Upgrade Worth It?

Now, the real question: Was the upgrade worth it?

Now that I’ve had the iPhone 16 Pro Max for a little while, I can honestly say that, while the upgrade may not have been necessary, it’s been beneficial. The battery life is a game changer. I no longer feel tethered to a charger throughout the day, and I can focus more on my work rather than worrying about my phone dying mid-task. My day-to-day flow has dramatically improved, and that alone has made the upgrade feel justified.As for the new camera button (the one I mocked in my previous article as a gimmick), I have to admit, in real life it feels pretty much just that. Just another button to do stuff we already could. 

So, did I make the right decision? 

Honestly, it’s hard to say. If I were being purely logical, the iPhone 15 Pro would have likely sufficed for another year or two. But life isn’t always about logic, is it? Sometimes it’s about convenience, necessity, and yes—even a little bit of indulgence.

I’m still not fully convinced the iPhone 16 Pro Max is a must-have for everyone, but for me, it’s been a worthy upgrade. I might not have been thrilled about the incremental changes at first, but the practical improvements—especially the battery life—have made a real difference in how I work and use my phone day-to-day.

So, while I stand by my initial opinion that the iPhone 16 series isn’t a massive leap forward, I’ve learned something valuable: When it comes to technology, sometimes the right decision is the one that solves a real-world problem, even if that decision goes against your previous advice. And that’s exactly what the iPhone 16 Pro Max did for me. The addition of a sweet trade-in deal, was just the cherry on top!
