Vivo V50 5G Lands in SA: Here’s the details

Another day, another smartphone promising to “redefine” mobile photography. This time, it’s the vivo V50 5G, fresh on South African shelves with a R20,999 price tag. That’s almost half the price of the Vivo X200 Pro launched earlier this year, which by the way was “The  best smartphone camera we’ve ever tested”. You can grab it outright or lock yourself into a contract with your favorite network. But the real question is: At half the price, is the Vivo V50 5G the overall better device?

A Serious Camera Setup—But Can It Deliver?

vivo’s long-running partnership with ZEISS is front and center here, with the V50 5G boasting a dual 50MP rear camera system. That means a 1/1.55-inch ultra-sensitive main sensor with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) for cleaner, sharper low-light shots, plus an ultra-wide 119° lens for capturing, well, everything.

And because no modern phone is complete without an over-the-top selfie camera, the V50 sports a 50MP front-facing lens with a 92° field of view and autofocus—because apparently, your selfies need pro-level precision now.

Software-wise, vivo is packing in a AI Aura Light Portrait 2.0 for softer, more natural lighting, ZEISS Multifocal Portrait for adjustable framing at 23mm, 35mm, and 50mm, and post-processing tricks like AI Erase 2.0 (goodbye, photobombers) and Live Cutout (because, why not?). On paper, it’s an impressive lineup.

    Design: Flashy Meets Functional

One thing vivo always gets right is making phones look premium, and the V50 5G is no exception. The 4D Infinity Curved Screen and 41° Golden Curvature frame sound fancy, but really, it’s all about making the phone feel sleek and comfortable in hand.

    Color-wise, you’ve got two options:

    • Satin Black (classic, understated, won’t collect fingerprints like a crime scene)
    • Starry Blue, which features a Holographic Process that shifts colors depending on the angle—because flashy gradient finishes are still very much alive in 2025.

Under the Hood: More Than Just a Pretty Face?

Running on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, vivo claims a 15% CPU boost and a 50% GPU improvement over last year’s model. The phone also comes with 12GB of RAM, plus an extra 12GB of virtual RAM, meaning multitasking and gaming should feel smooth—even if virtual RAM is more of a marketing flex than a game-changer.

Battery Life & Charging: Big Numbers, Big Promises

A 6000mAh battery is no joke—especially when paired with vivo’s 90W FlashCharge. The company claims you’ll get six hours of talk time from just a 10-minute charge. Whether that translates into real-world longevity or just another “lab test” fantasy is something we’ll need to test.

Smart power management features like AI Sleep Mode and Smart Charging Engine are also thrown in to optimize battery health over time. Translation: fewer dead-battery panic moments… hopefully.

Durability: Surprisingly Tough for a Glass-Covered Phone

Here’s a twist: the vivo V50 5G is IP68 and IP69 certified. That means it can handle dust, water, and even some drops and scratches without immediately turning into an expensive paperweight. For a phone this sleek, that’s a welcome addition. It seems more brands are starting to prioritize durability, with the recently released Honor X9c and OPPO’s Reno 13 also having this as a major focus – and we’re all for it.

    Final Thoughts

The vivo V50 5G is putting out a lot here: pro-level portrait photography, premium design, solid performance, and flagship-tier durability. But does all of that come together into a device worth R20,999? That’s the real question.

We’ll be putting it through its paces in a full review soon, diving into the camera capabilities, battery life, and overall experience. So Stay tuned to find out if vivo can actually delivers on all these promises.
