Held at Flushing Meadows Corona Park from June 6–8, the Governor’s Ball Music Festival welcomed headliners like Olivia Rodrigo, Tyler, The Creator and Hozier . But on opening night, it was Tyla who electrified the crowd. She brought her signature fusion of Amapiano, R&B, and pop, complete with sultry vocals and irresistible rhythms, that felt both fresh and grounded in her roots.

Tyla powered through hits like “Water,” “Push 2 Start,” and “Breathe Me,” debuting her shimmering new track “Bliss” live for the first time. Her performance of “Truth or Dare,” was highly praised with the audience calling it “a moment of high-energy charisma’”. Accompanied by dancers delivering traditional South African moves, Tyla’s choreography turned her set into a high-energy cultural celebration

Tyla’s bold fashion choices of micro camo shorts, a cropped tee adorned with silver chains and crosses, calf-length cow-print boots, and her iconic “goddess” braids, earned her a wave of praise for channeling that edgy New York festival allure

A major moment not just for Tyla, but for South African music. She became the first South African soloist to land on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years with “Water” and has won numerous awards, including the inaugural Grammy for Best African Music Performance. Her Governors Ball set added another milestone: showcasing the global rise of Amapiano and the power of South African artistry. IOL declared she “mesmerised the crowd… with her high‑energy performance, showcasing her unique blend of Amapiano and R&B”

While Governors Ball grappled with rainy weather and varied performances this year, Tyla’s fiery debut stood out as a clear highlight . Her set proved that global stages are ready and waiting for the sounds of South Africa.

On the horizon: Tyla will release an original song, “Everything Goes With Blue,” for the upcoming Smurfs soundtrack, and she’s set to host the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards on June 21. With her Governors Ball performance still buzzing, it’s clear this Johannesburg-born artist is on the brink of something much bigger.

Tyla didn’t just perform at Governors Ball, she owned it. Through magnetic stage presence, cultural storytelling, and chart-topping hits, she reaffirmed her role as a global ambassador for South African music.
