In a jolt to high‑octane Hollywood buzz, director Michael Bay has officially exited the upcoming Netflix action thriller Fast and Loose, which was set to re‑unite him with Will Smith, a collaboration many hoped would recapture the magic of Bad Boys.
Although Bay did not return for the other Bad Boys movies, and it has been a long time since he and Smith worked together. Smith has has since proven himself as an action star. As such, seeing the pair collaborate on an action movie once again with Fast and Loose would have been fun.
Deadline confirms that Bay’s departure stems from irreconcilable creative differences with Smith. The director reportedly favoured a more intense action-driven tone while the star leaned into comedic elements. Similar reports suggest that Netflix is now actively searching for a third director ahead of production, which had been slated to begin in October 2025. World of Reel further clarifies the schism in vision: Bay “wanted to go all in on the action, while Smith preferred a more comedic sensibility,” thus triggering the split.
Originally announced last fall, Fast and Loose centres on a man who awakens in Tijuana with no memory, soon learning he has been leading a double life as both a crime lord and an undercover CIA agent. The screenplay comes from Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, Chris Bremner, and Eric Pearson, based on an initial pitch by the Hoebers. The project is produced by Smith’s Westbrook Studios, 87North Productions, and Kelly McCormick, with David Leitch also serving as a producer.
With Bay’s exit confirmed as of August 6, 2025, Netflix is reportedly aiming for a new director to take the helm swiftly to keep the project on track for a potential start in late 2025. In the meantime, Bay moves on to other highly anticipated projects, including a possible Transformers return and a film adaptation of the video game OutRun, featuring Sydney Sweeney
