Michael: The Man Behind The Persona
This movie is trying to capture the life of an artist who was, for better or worse, one of the most influential people to ever walk the earth. It isn’t just a highlight reel of the hits. It’s looking at Michael Jackson beyond the stage. Starting with that initial spark of talent in the Jackson Five and following that almost obsessive drive to become the biggest entertainer in the world. It’s interesting to see how the off-stage stuff will be handled. We are no strangers to Michael’s iconic performances. But this promises a closer look at the person behind the persona. Playing Michael is his nephew,Jaafar Jackson, which adds a layer of weight to the whole thing.
Antoine Fuqua know for Training Day and The Equalizer movies is in the director’s chair. One thing that can be said about Fuqua, is that he knows how to handle scale and tension. The script was handled by John Logan, who has a massive resume including Gladiator and Skyfall. With that kind of pedigree, our expectations are high and we hope that the end product will be more than just a glossy biopic.
After some delays pushed movie out of last year, Lionsgate finally has a date on the calendar. Michael hits theatres nationwide on April 24th, 2026. It’ll be interesting to see if it actually lives up to the massive legacy it’s trying to portray.
Behind The Scenes
“All I could think of was: can Jaafar really pull this off?”. Lionsgate just dropped a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Michael, that big-budget biopic about the King of Pop. It’s an “epic” in the truest sense, tracing his life from the early Jackson 5 days all the way to global superstardom. Graham King, the guy who produced Bohemian Rhapsody, is behind this one too, so you know it’s going to be flashy and built for a theatre screen.
The biggest talking point is obviously Jaafar Jackson. It’s his first time acting, which is a hell of a gamble, even if he is Michael’s nephew. This new video leans hard into that casting choice, showing director Antoine Fuqua and King admitting they were actually pretty nervous about putting him in the role. Apparently, he won them over.
The cast they’ve pulled together is actually impressive and includes Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Miles Teller, Nia Long and Laura Harrier
The rest of the call sheet includes Kat Graham and Larenz Tate, so there’s plenty of talent surrounding the newcomer. We’re only a couple of months out from the April release, and the marketing is clearly hitting its stride. After seeing the trailer a few weeks back, this BTS look feels like the studio’s way of reassuring everyone that Jaafar isn’t just a legacy hire, but actually the right fit. We’ll see if that’s true soon enough.
