Hollywood loves a good heist story, but what it loves even more apparently, is a production that keeps slipping through the cracks. Margot Robbie’s upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel has hit another snag, and this one comes from behind the camera. Director Lee Isaac Chung has officially stepped away from the project, leaving Warner Bros. searching once again for someone to steer the ship. So for those of you that did not know, yes, this is the second time. This adds a new twist to a project that has already taken a few unexpected turns. According to reports by Deadline, the split happened because of creative differences between Chung and the studio. The departure was described as amicable, with both sides making it clear that there is still mutual respect and an openness to work together in the future.
The Second Director to Walk Away
Chung, best known for the Oscar-nominated Minari and more recently Twisters, had stepped in after the film’s original director, Jay Roach, exited the project. Roach had been attached since the early days of development but quietly moved on, for undisclosed reasons, leaving Chung to take over.
Now Chung has also departed. According to reports, the split came down to creative differences between the filmmaker and the studio. Sources describe the separation as amicable, which in Hollywood language usually means everyone shook hands politely while heading toward different doors. Warner Bros. still respects Chung’s work and has not ruled out collaborating with him again in the future. Still, the timing means the film is once again in the awkward position of needing a new director before it can properly move forward.
“ Lee Isaac is a singular filmmaking talent whose vision and partnership have been invaluable to Warner Bros. and LuckyChap throughout this journey. Our experience with him has only deepened our enthusiasm to collaborate on future projects together.”
A Stylish Step Back in Time
The project itself is an intriguing one. Instead of another modern-day heist, this film travels back to the 1960s. The story unfolds in Europe and explores the earlier generation connected to the famous Ocean crime family. Margot Robbie not only stars in the film but also produces it through her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, which continues to build a reputation for backing distinctive projects. There has also been talk of Bradley Cooper potentially joining the cast, although details about his role remain very secretive.
A Franchise That Knows How to Pull a Job
The Ocean’s franchise has always been one of Warner Bros.’ most reliable plays. Steven Soderbergh’s slick 2001 remake of Ocean’s Eleven, led by George Clooney and Brad Pitt, turned a classic Rat Pack movie into a modern blockbuster machine. That film spawned two sequels and eventually the female-led spin-off Ocean’s 8 in 2018, proving the brand still had plenty of charm left in its tuxedo pocket. So the appetite for another entry is definitely there.
The Big Question Now
At the moment, the real mystery isn’t the plot of the film. It’s who will end up directing it. Projects lose directors all the time in Hollywood. Sometimes it signals trouble. Other times it’s simply the messy part of development before the right creative team finally locks in. But when a heist movie keeps losing its mastermind, you start to wonder if the job itself might be harder than expected. For now, the safe is still closed, the crew isn’t fully assembled, and Warner Bros. is once again looking for someone to lead the next big Ocean’s job.
