Just when the delay felt too long, news arrives that Batman Part 11 is finally underway. And if there is anything you can count on, no matter how chaotic Gotham gets, it is for certain characters to show up. Alfred is one of those anchors. And now, it looks like he’s not going anywhere. According to Deadline, Andy Serkis is set to return as Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman Part II. This may not exactly come as a shock. But this is exactly what fans need. I for one, really cannot imagine a sequel without Alfred standing in the corner, watching Bruce Wayne spiral, with a mix of concern and frustration. It would be incomplete for sure.

Andy Serkis Returns, But With Questions Still Hanging

When Serkis talks about the sequel, you can sense a hint of caution. And that is fair considering that the script is still coming together, and even he doesn’t fully know where Alfred lands this time. Which, honestly, feels on brand for this whole production. Everyone’s waiting and slowly feeling their way through it.

But we’ve already seen enough to understand one thing. Alfred in The Batman wasn’t the polished, well-kept safety net we’d gotten used to. He felt worn. Like someone who’s been holding onto guilt for too long. A less steady father figure, and more of a man sitting with the weight of “I did what I could… but it wasn’t enough.”

Per Screen Rant, Serkis said he “won’t be joining them immediately,” them being Batman II, but “by the end of the year, I will be”.

A Different Kind of Alfred, A Different Kind of Batman

This version of Batman leans more into damage than crime or corruption. The kind of damage that doesn’t heal without a scar. It’s the kind of damage that stays with you long after the battle. Alfred and Bruce aren’t just mentor and protégé here. They are two people circling the same unresolved history. Serkis has hinted before that this relationship is central to the story, in a very foundational way. So his return suggests something bigger than a simple cameo. It suggests continuity, and whatever comes next for Bruce Wayne, won’t happen in isolation.

The Batman Part II Is Still Taking Shape

Why is this important?…..well, this version of Gotham doesn’t feel like a place where anyone could survive on their own. Right now, everything is being built behind closed doors. The script is reportedly in progress and details tightly locked down. Which means we’re in that familiar Batman space again. Waiting, speculating, and reading into every small update like it’s a clue. But one thing is clear. When the lights come back on in Gotham, Alfred will still be there. Probably in the shadows, saying very little. But will somehow be carrying more weight than most of the city combined. The Batman Part II drops on October 1st, 2027,
