The wait has been long, too long. But you can take consolation in knowing that if you’re still emotionally recovering from that Across the Spider-Verse cliffhanger, you’re not alone. After numerous changes along the way there’s movement. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is a go. It’s happening and now we have a release window plus a first proper look.
Sony confirms Dave Callaham, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller are writing the story, with the film set to hit cinemas on 18 June 2027, nearly a decade after Into The Spider-Verse blew our minds. It closes one of the most visually daring and emotionally layered superhero trilogies in recent years. If you’re wondering where the story picks up,The answer is simple, it’s picking up exactly where things left off. Yes, Miles remains stuck on Earth-42, facing a version of himself who didn’t become Spider-Man… but something much darker. And that darkness that has created immense tension, resulting in an identity crisis. The question of who he’s supposed to be versus who he chooses to be… it’s all still glaring at the front and centre of the movie.

The newly released images depict that to a “T”. There’s a sharper edge to everything. You can feel the weight that resides in Miles now. This isn’t the same kid discovering his powers. He knows exactly what’s at stake and will refuse to be told how the story is “supposed” to go. At the same time, the wider Spider-Verse is still very much in motion. Despite what you may think, Gwen hasn’t disappeared into the background. She’s busy building something by pulling together allies, and desperately trying to get back to Miles before things spiral even further.

The newly released images show the film doubling down again.. If you thought Into the Spider-Verse cracked the door open and Across blew it off its hinges, this one feels like it’s stepping through with zero intention of playing it safe. The early glimpses suggest more experimentation, more colour, more chaos… but with control. The kind that feels intentional, not just flashy. Of course, getting here hasn’t been straightforward. They originally planned to release the film much earlier, but production challenges and industry strikes pushed it back. Now though, it seems like the team is taking the time to land this properly, without any rush, or compromise.
This is expected, because the ending of an epic trilogy, takes time. A story that started with a kid unsure of himself, evolving into something much bigger. It’s now about choice, identity, and refusing to follow the script of others.
And if these early looks are anything to go by, they’re not aiming for a neat, easy wrap-up. They’re aiming for something that that will stick.
