Tom Holland Wins Over Critics in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Tom Holland stars as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is earning positive first reactions from critics following its Hollywood premiere.

Over the decades being Spider-Man has never been easy. For Peter Parker it has been a web of juggling school, work, relationships, and villains determined to flatten New York. If there is one Spider-man that has had a really tough time, it has definitely been Tom Holland’s version.

When Spider-Man: No Way Home ended, Peter lost almost everything. His friends no longer remembered him. His identity disappeared from the world. And he walked away completely isolated. This ushered in an entirely new chapter for both Peter Parker and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which brought on

    enormous expectations.

The truth is that the past few years haven’t exactly been smooth sailing for Marvel. I completely agree that there have been moments of celebration. But you know what, there have also been projects that have been questioned. Because at a certain point fans began to wonder whether the studio had lost a little of the magic that made the Infinity Saga so special. Which brings us to Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

And judging by the first reactions…Marvel may finally found the magic that had gone AWOL for a time. Sony and Marvel held the world premiere at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Monday night, and the first reactions are in. Tom Holland has received praise by critics and early viewers, with several calling it his strongest outing as Peter Parker yet. Others have highlighted Destin Daniel Cretton’s direction, saying that the emotional storytelling and the film’s street-level approach has successfully captured what makes Spider-Man such a beloved character. What a very positive vibe.

Don’t mind me. I’m just sitting here crying after watching #SpidermanBrandNewDay

It’s a massive movie that balances like 5 different through lines in equal measure, each better than the last. It can feel a little overwhelming but it all comes together so beautifully it works. pic.twitter.com/5dHvcF58Sk

Among the comments is one that really stands out, for me at least. It seems that this movie simply allows Spider-Man to be Spider-Man and that’s probably why it has worked so well. This is something that recent superhero movies forget sometimes. Between the spectacular action sequences and major Marvel surprises, lies  a young man trying to do the right thing. Regardless that his personal life continues falling apart. This has always been Peter Parker’s greatest superpower. Not the webs so much, but his humanity.

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY is a much more cerebral followup than the crowd pleasing No Way Home. It’s Tom Holland’s best performance as Peter Parker and the best Spider-Man movie since Raimi’s SPIDER-MAN 2. Also the costume finally looks incredible #spidermanbrandnewday

Early reactions also praise the chemistry between the returning cast, while several viewers singled out the film’s emotional moments as some of the strongest in Holland’s Spider-Man journey so far. Destin Daniel Cretton also received praise for balancing large-scale Marvel spectacle with a more grounded, personal story.  But like every other movie, these are only the first reactions. We’ve all seen movies receive standing ovations at premieres before that fell short at the box office.

It really is a brand new day for Peter Parker as Destin Daniel Cretton takes over for Jon Watts in the director’s chair for SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY. Cretton brings a more grounded, back-to-basics approach to the beloved web-slinger, making this fourth standalone film feel like… pic.twitter.com/d3DNxiyBHA

So being a little cautious isn’t a bad thing. I guess the difference here is that there have been multiple independent reactions that have used phrases like “best Spider-Man movie,” “Tom Holland’s finest performance,” and “Marvel is back,” it’s difficult not to get a little excited. For Marvel Studios, Brand New Day feels more like a test than just another sequel. Can Spider-Man once again become the hero who reminds audiences why they fell in love with the MCU in the first place?

    We’ll find out soon enough.

But judging by these first reactions…

Your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man may have just spun another web around audiences.
