Smartwatch vs. Smart Ring: Which Is Better?

Smartwatches have been our wrist-dwelling companions for a while now, tracking our steps, monitoring our sleep, and even letting us answer calls without digging for our phones. But a new contender has entered the ring (pun intended!): smart rings. These sleek, minimalist devices promise a more discreet way to track your health and fitness. But are they really worth the hype?

Both smartwatches and smart rings serve similar purposes aiming to help us live healthier, more connected lives. But they cater to different needs and preferences. So, before you ditch your trusty smartwatch or jump on the smart ring bandwagon, let’s break down the key differences.

Smartwatches come in a variety of styles, with customizable straps and faces offering personalisation to suit your taste. They’re great for those who prefer to have a screen to view notifications, track their workouts in real-time, or control music playback on your phone. And with features like voice assistants, contactless payments, and even LTE connectivity, they offer a more comprehensive connected experience.

If you find wearing a watch uncomfortable, especially at night, a smart ring might be a better fit (literally!). They’re designed to be comfortable enough to be worn 24/7, providing continuous tracking without the bulk of a watch. And for those trying to limit screen time, a smart ring can be less distracting, as it doesn’t bombard you with notifications. But bear in mind that smart rings don’t offer adjustable sizing, so you may not find your perfect fit, resulting in your ring getting lost between the sheets.

While smart rings are undeniably smaller and more discreet, resembling traditional jewellery and it’s amazing how much technology is packed into such a tiny package, they’re not without their drawbacks. Accuracy can be a concern, as the fit of the ring can affect sensor readings, especially during sleep. And with their constant contact with surfaces, smart rings are more prone to scratches and wear and tear. In actuality it’s more likely to get in the way and isn’t practical for certain types of activities. For example, lifting heavy weights with a smart ring just isn’t a great experience. At best, the ring will end up scratched by the bar or dumbbell. As a result wearing your ring to the gym might not be such a good idea.  It has also been noted that rings with matte black finishes, such as the Ultrahuman Ring Air and the Circular Ring Slim, scratch easily. So if durability is a priority, consider a premium smartwatch built with tougher materials.

Another deciding factor is charging time -Smartwatches often require nightly charging, which can be a hassle. Smart rings, on the other hand, can last for several days on a single charge. However, battery life varies between models, the Oura Ring Generation 3 lasts up to 7 days on a single charge, whereas the Circular Ring Slim needs recharging after just 2 days, so it’s worth considering your needs before making a purchase.

While smart rings are improving in the fitness tracking department, smartwatches still offer more detailed data and real-time feedback. In addition, with their built-in screens, you can easily monitor your progress during workouts. The accuracy debate between smart rings and smartwatches continues to rage on. Some may argue that rings, worn on the finger, provide more precise heart rate and temperature data. However, accuracy depends on the sensors, data interpretation, and crucially, the fit. One might find that the ring fit may be fine for use during the day, but may move around at night, affecting the sensor readings.

To add to this there is also the budget to consider.Smartwatches offer a wider range of price points, from budget-friendly options to premium models. Smart rings, on the other hand, tend to be more expensive, with some like the “Oura” even requiring subscriptions for full functionality. This may offer perks like upgrades and app integration, but factor in those ongoing costs before you buy. Make sure a subscription fits your budget.

The Verdict: A Matter of Choice

Smart rings and smartwatches both have pros and cons.Ultimately, the choice between a smartwatch and a smart ring depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you prioritize detailed fitness tracking, app integration, and a wider range of features, a smartwatch is likely the better choice. But if you prefer a discreet, comfortable device that excels at sleep tracking and offers a more minimalist approach to health monitoring, a smart ring might be the way to go.
