    Netflix Goes Big In Spain

Netflix has announced a landmark investment in Spain: more than €1 billion (around $1.14 billion) will be directed toward local production between 2025 and 2028. The announcement came at a celebratory event in Madrid marking the streaming giant’s ten-year anniversary in the country reported variety

The announcement came from Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos during a brief but wide-ranging speech at a press event in Spain on Tuesday. Sarandos’ speech highlighted Netflix’s accomplishments in Spain and the key factors behind its success, notably commending the country’s “regulations that encourage creativity, innovation, and long-term thinking.” His remarks also carried a subtle critique of other nations such as France, where Netflix recently appealed to the Council of State over restrictive windowing rules, amid ongoing EU discussions around stricter content quotas for streaming platforms.

The funds will be utilised to expand Netflix’s audiovisual production in Spain by developing original series, movies, and new seasons of hit shows. Led by “Money Heist” seasons and “Society of the Snow,” Spain has scored more entries in Netflix’s Top 10s of most-viewed non-English language shows and movies ever, than any other country in the world, beating France (5), South Korea (2), Mexico (2) and Norway (2) and Germany (1).

With this investment, we will be able to contribute even more to the Spanish economy. Create more Spanish jobs. Tell more great stories made in Spain . Support the next generation of creative talent here in Spain,” said Sarandos , noting that Netflix has filmed in over 200 cities and towns across the country, bringing to the screen “all the different sides of Spain. “

The investment builds on Netflix’s decade-long presence in Spain, during which the company has produced more than 1,000 Spanish titles since 2017. Spanish films and series have proven highly successful for Netflix, generating over five billion viewing hours on the platform last year alone.

Among Netflix’s major Spanish productions are global sensations like its first original series Cable Girls and Money Heist(La Casa de Papel), which became the platform’s first non-English-language series to top global viewership charts.

“Money Heist” (La Casa de Papel) was Netflix’s first most-watched non-English language series.

“Dali masks, red jumpsuits, Bella Ciao — they’ve all become instantly recognizable symbols of global pop culture,” said Sarandos as he spotlighted standout Spanish titles. These also include Elite, Netflix’s longest-running international series, and the Oscar-nominated film Society of the Snow, based on the harrowing 1972 Andes plane crash, which earned 12 Goya Awards.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Digital Transformation Minister Óscar López attended the event, praising the announcement as further proof of Spain’s growing role in global audiovisual culture. Sánchez noted that cultural industries contribute 2.3% of GDP and provide 770,000 jobs. He also credited Netflix with re-shaping global perceptions of Spain and boosting tourism through its shows.

Netflix’s commitment of over €1 billion from 2025 to 2028 is a signal that Spain is central to its vision. It’s a win for Spanish storytellers, the creative economy, and the country’s cultural prestige. Expect an influx of ambitious local productions backed by world-class infrastructure and an enduring Netflix-Spain partnership for years to come.
