Angelina Jolie is set to reignite her action-thriller legacy by stepping back into a role reminiscent of her early cinematic powerhouses such as Salt and The Tourist. Her next project is the spy thriller The Initiative, which reunites her with director Doug Liman. Liman is best known for directing Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), the film that cemented Jolie’s reputation as an action star.

Described by The Hollywood Reporter as “Training Day set in the world of spycraft,” The Initiative promises a tense, character-driven narrative within an espionage setting. Jolie will portray Bright, a rogue master spy with a morally ambiguous edge. Her unorthodox methods leave a new recruit, tentatively named Charlie, questioning whether she is a mentor or a threat.

Screenplay written by F. Scott Frazier, whose credits include Collide and xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. Production led by RK Films, with Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum on board, both of whom worked with Jolie on Maleficent. Studio involvement: Universal Pictures is pursuing the project with the goal of starting production as early as the first quarter of 2026.

This project represents a high-profile return to action for Jolie, who recently starred in the biopic Maria (2024), directed Without Blood, and took on roles in Couture and Maude v Maude. Doug Liman continues to expand his workload with multiple ambitious projects, including an underwater thriller titled Deeper starring Tom Cruise, as well as a planned feature with SpaceX that will actually be shot in space.

The project marks Jolie’s much-anticipated return to the spy thriller genre, where she has previously excelled. While the reunion of Jolie and Liman brings together two creative forces whose collaboration shaped modern action cinema. The premise offers a fresh mix of moral tension, mentorship, and espionage that speaks to today’s audiences.

The Initiative is a major upcoming collaboration that pairs Angelina Jolie’s commanding presence with Doug Liman’s high-energy direction. With its moral intrigue and espionage thrills, the film has the potential to redefine the modern spy thriller.

After 28 years in corporate life, I swapped spreadsheets for screenplays and now write movie reviews and celebrity articles for Geekhub. It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
