Opulent & Primedia Put African Stories on the World Stage

In a major stride for African storytelling, Opulent Entertainment Group, co-founded by actor-producer Denim Richards and celebrated South African director Mandla Dube, has entered into an exciting collaboration with Primedia Studios. This strategic alliance is set to catapult African talent and content onto the global stage through several high-profile “shiny-floor” shows.

A Proven Track Record in African Storytelling

Richards has played a leading role in the US hit drama Yellowstone alongside Kevin Costner and has been actively building infrastructure for film, television, and theatre across the African continent. One of Opulent’s standout achievements is the crime thriller Heart of the Hunter, based on Deon Meyer’s best-selling novel. This film made history by becoming the first African production to reach #1 on Netflix, amassing over 11 million views in its opening week.

A Shared Vision for African Entertainment

Jan du Plessis, President of Primedia Studios, expressed the excitement behind the collaboration:

“We are honoured and incredibly excited to join forces with Denim and his Opulent Entertainment Group on a venture that will unearth new stars and infuse these four top-tier ‘shiny-floor’ shows with the spirit of Africa… Denim’s extensive experience oscillating between Hollywood and our home ground … will take Primedia Studios’ content slate to the next level.”

Empowering Talent On and Off the Screen

Denim Richards emphasised the importance of this partnership in bolstering local talent pipelines:

“The key to the future and sustainability of entertainment in Africa lies in collaboration and opportunities. … Shows like The Voice, Project Runway, Idols and Dancing with the Stars are a powerful platform for undiscovered talent from Africa – not only in front of the camera, but also behind the scenes.”

He further reflected on the alignment of visions upon meeting Primedia’s leadership:

“Meeting Primedia’s Group CEO Jonathan Procter and his team has inspired us at Opulent Entertainment Group because our dreams and vision are aligned.”

A Bold Statement from Primedia’s CEO

Jonathan Procter, Group CEO of Primedia, lent his voice in praise of Richards:

“Denim Richards is a force of nature. He will fundamentally change the future of creators and the industry in Africa and the way the world understands the creative soul of Africa.”

    Why This Collaboration Matters

    • Unprecedented Reach: With Richards’ Hollywood experience and Opulent’s proven success on platforms like Netflix, the partnership brings a powerful storytelling pedigree to the African content landscape.
    • Sustainable Growth: By focusing on building capacity both on-camera and behind the scenes, this initiative supports a more inclusive and resilient entertainment industry.
    • Global Platforms, African Soul: Through internationally recognised formats like The Voice, Idols, Project Runway, and Dancing with the Stars, the project promises to fuse global appeal with authentic African narratives.
    • Strategic Leadership: With the empowered leadership of industry heavyweights like Jan du Plessis and Jonathan Procter, Primedia Studios brings substantial resources and operational know-how to the venture.

    Looking Ahead

As the collaboration unfolds, audiences can expect the launch of multi-genre, glitzy production franchises infused with African culture and talent. The initiative also underscores a broader movement: African creatives harnessing cosmopolitan production standards to amplify their stories globally, reshaping the international media and entertainment landscape.

After 28 years in corporate life, I swapped spreadsheets for screenplays and now write movie reviews and celebrity articles for Geekhub. It’s been a year of creative freedom, storytelling, and loving what I do—plus the occasional dramatic reaction to plot twists. No more meetings, just movies—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
