Gotham’s villains get their own story, a hideout and a whole mode built around it in LEGO Batman’s next expansion,
The Mayhem Collection arrives on 18 September for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, with Joker and Harley Quinn taking the lead. For anyone who already owns the Deluxe Edition, this expansion is included so there’s no reason to reach for your wallet.
The official game website confirms that Mayhem is part of the Deluxe package and requires the full base game while Standard Edition owners have a Deluxe upgrade option. We could not very the South African Rand pricing at the time of writing and that makes checking which version you own the sensible first step. Just because an expansion is advertised again does not necessarily mean you need to buy it again.
The more interesting part, though, is what TT Games is doing with these characters.
In its 14 September developer post on Xbox Wire, the team describes an expansion influenced by Batman: The Animated Series. Even the cutscenes use a 4:3 frame, giving a nod to the television format associated with the show.
There is a difference between adding familiar costumes and thinking about how a particular version of Gotham should feel. Batman has been interpreted so many times that choosing a specific influence gives an expansion some identity.
The story follows Joker and Harley out of Arkham and into a hideout beneath the Funhouse at Amusement Mile. Players can customise that space, while Mayhem Mode introduces timed runs around Gotham’s North Island. Studs collected during those outings feed into lasting upgrades and unlocks back at the base.
The developers also describe a stronger emphasis on ranged gadgets and movement. That suggests a different rhythm from the main campaign, although how well it works will need to be judged once the expansion is playable.
For existing players, the appeal is having something new to do with a game they already know. A repeatable mode could provide a reason for many a player to return after finishing the story, especially if the upgrades make subsequent runs more interesting.
It could also risk becoming repetitive and a lot will depend on the variety of the challenges and whether playing as Joker and Harley feels meaningfully different over time.
The animated-series influence gives comic-book fans another reason to pay attention as LEGO is well suited to playing with different versions of these characters without needing to explain an entire continuity first.
The announced Xbox Series X|S release is Friday, 18 September. South African players should confirm the expansion’s listing and their edition entitlement on their own platform. There is no confirmed local unlock time in the material reviewed.
For Deluxe owners, this is content already included in their purchase just arriving now. Standard Edition owners have more reason to wait for impressions and check the local upgrade price.
