Gears of War : E-Day launches on 6 October, bringing Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago back for a story set 14 years before the original game. For returning players, that is a chance to revisit the relationship at the centre of the series, while newcomers get a story positioned at the beginning of the Locust invasion rather than another numbered sequel.
But before the nostalgia gets anywhere near your bank account, check what you are already paying Microsoft for. E-Day is included at launch with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, which could make buying a separate copy unnecessary for the way you intend to play.
What time can South Africans start playing?
The Coalition’s launch announcement puts the worldwide release at 15:00 UTC on Tuesday, 6 October. That works out to 5pm South African time, rather than midnight.
Premium Edition early access began on 1 October, including access for eligible Game Pass subscribers who bought the Premium Upgrade. If you have seen people playing already, that is why.
The announced platforms are Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Steam. There is no PS5 or Xbox One version in the launch platform list.
Pre-installation opened on 29 September, so players with an eligible purchase or subscription can get the download out of the way before release. If you are planning an evening around it, starting the installation at 5pm is an optimistic approach to getting any actual gaming done.
R1,499, or a subscription you may already have
BT Games lists the physical Xbox edition at R1,499, reduced from R1,599, in its preorder listing checked on 5 October. That is one retailer’s offer, not a claim about the cheapest price across South Africa.
The more useful comparison starts with what you already own and subscribe to.
| How you plan to play | What to check |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S with Game Pass Ultimate | The base game is included at launch while your subscription and the game’s availability continue. |
| PC with PC Game Pass or Ultimate | Launch-day access is included through the Xbox PC service. This does not give you a Steam purchase. |
| Xbox with Game Pass Premium or Essential | Do not assume your plan includes E-Day at launch. The confirmed launch-day plans are Ultimate and PC Game Pass. |
| Buying the physical Xbox edition | BT Games lists R1,499. Check that your console has a disc drive; the listing also requires a content download. |
The subscription distinctions are confirmed by Xbox’s game announcement and South African Game Pass information.
The distinction between access and ownership matters too. Microsoft’s terms explain that access through Game Pass ends when the subscription expires or the game leaves the catalogue. A subscription can make sense for someone who wants to play the campaign over a few evenings, but that is a different decision from buying a game you expect to return to regularly.
If you already have a qualifying plan, I would start there. There is very little reason to buy another route into the same base game before establishing whether you actually enjoy it.
Playing with someone else needs a little planning
The advertised modes include the campaign, Horde Siege and competitive Versus, with two-player split-screen available on console. Xbox online multiplayer requires a subscription that includes that benefit, even if you buy the game separately.
That makes it worth checking the whole setup before convincing a friend to spend money: the platform, the game entitlement and, on console, the online multiplayer subscription. “I’ve bought the game” and “we’re ready to play together” are not always the same thing.
For PC players, The Coalition has published an updated specification chart in its pre-install announcement. Check that against your hardware before buying, rather than assuming that a machine which handled an older Gears game will deliver the experience shown in the new trailers.
The return is interesting. The verdict comes after playing.
What interests me about E-Day is the opportunity to make the Locust frightening again through characters who are experiencing the invasion for the first time. A prequel has an obvious limitation because returning players know where the wider story goes, but there is still room to make the people caught in it matter.
Whether The Coalition has managed that is something I would want to judge through playing. This is a launch guide, not a hands-on review, and a familiar pair of characters is not enough on its own to earn a recommendation.
For now, the practical advice is straightforward: check your subscription, get the download started and keep the R1,499 in your account if you already have access. You can decide whether E-Day deserves a permanent place in your collection once you have spent some time with it.
