OPPO’s R6,000 budget A60 turns up the heat

OPPO's R6,000 budget A60 turns up the heat

Honor just released their X6b a few days ago and yet another contender enters this hotly contested mid-range smartphone space. This time it’s Oppo stepping into the ring. Having already released their flagship Reno 12 series earlier this year, they’ve just dropped their latest creation, the Oppo A60, onto the South African market, and at a price of R6,000, it’s surely going to get some attention.

But can it truly stand out from the crowd? The A60 is entering a fiercely competitive arena, squaring off with a host of smartphones that often sport lower price tags. The excellent Honor X6b is just one such example.

First impressions are certainly promising. The A60 boasts an expansive 6.67-inch display, with 90Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 950 nits, and is offered in a choice of two stylish colors: Midnight Purple or Ripple Blue. It is protected against minor splashes and the occasional dust storm with an IP54 rating. OPPO also claims to have been the first in this price range to include a Splash Touch feature to its screen. Using an advanced touch detection algorithm within the touch chip, the A60 improves touch accuracy and responsiveness when the screen is wet.

Under the hood, you’ll find a respectable 256GB of storage, and Oppo has generously included a 45W SUPERVOOC charger – a feature rarely found in this price range, paired with a standard 5,000mAh battery.

In the camera department, a 50MP main sensor takes center stage, supported by a 2MP depth sensor for those artistic portrait shots. Selfie enthusiasts will appreciate the 8MP front-facing camera. It seems every smartphone these days has to have some sort of AI smarts and OPPO delivers here too, with features like Portrait Mode, AI Portrait Retouching, and Dual-view Video, the A60 can capture crystal-clear, natural portraits and eye-catching videos that bring users’ creative visions to life with just a few simple taps.

We would still need to have some hands-on time with the device and conduct a full review to see how it stacks up in daily use and the value it offers in a sea of mid-range options. However, if previous OPPO releases are anything to go by, the OPPO A60 may have just made it onto your shopping list.

The Oppo A60 is available in South Africa, priced at R6,000, or you can snag it on contract for R300 per month from major network providers and select retailers. Will it conquer the budget smartphone battleground? Time will tell, but it certainly has the potential to shake things up.
