The Wolverine PS5 Gameplay Is Here, and It’s as Bloody as You Hoped

Four years is a lifetime in the gaming industry. That’s how long it’s been since Sony and Insomniac Games first teased the existence of a new Wolverine title for the PlayStation 5. The original announcement was, in classic gaming-hype fashion, a brief, cinematic flash: Logan, sitting at a bar, his adamantium claws clicking out with an air of violent intent.

This week, at the company’s State of Play event, we finally got a look at what they’ve been cooking. And for a character so often sanitized, the violence was, in a word, a revelation.

A Logan That Doesn’t Pull Any Punches

Let’s get the obvious out of the way: this game is not for the faint of heart. Insomniac has made it abundantly clear they are not interested in the Saturday morning cartoon version of the character. This is the Wolverine of the R-rated comics and films, a man of brutal efficiency. The gameplay reveal featured claws tearing through armor, blood spraying, and, in one particularly jarring moment, Logan driving his claws straight through a man’s face.

It’s shocking, to be sure. But it also feels right. Fans have waited for years for a game that embraces the unhinged, bloody mess that is Wolverine, an antihero who has always existed on the fringes of acceptable violence. Finally, it looks like they’re getting exactly that.

    Familiar Faces and Lost Memories

But the new trailer wasn’t just a gore-fest. It also offered a glimpse into the narrative, a journey of lost memories and brutal reckoning that feels ripped straight from the comics. We saw appearances from classic villains, hinting at the scope of the story:

    • Mystique shows up, an early red flag for Logan on his journey. Her allegiances are, as always, anyone’s guess.
    • Omega Red makes a long-awaited video game debut.
    • The Reavers, the cybernetically-enhanced mutant hunters, are in the mix.

The trailer closes with the arrival of a hulking Sentinel-type machine, signaling that this is more than just a street-level brawl. Insomniac, the studio that so deftly handled the emotional arcs in their Spider-Man series, appears to be layering the violence with a story of identity and survival.

    The Big Picture

The game is set to land in Autumn 2026 exclusively on PS5, with a more detailed gameplay reveal promised for the spring. For now, the hype feels justified. The risk, however, is clear. A character like Wolverine needs more than just shock value to carry a game. If Insomniac can’t match the brutality with the same emotional depth and strong storytelling they are known for, the novelty of the gore will wear off quickly.

But for now, it feels like Wolverine finally has a game that looks as complex, and as brutal, as the character deserves.
