From Aqua Man to collecting video game adaptations faster than most people collect streaming subscriptions. Jason Momoa has survived the blocky chaos of A Minecraft Movie, signed up for Street Fighter, and was gearing up to lead Sony’s big-screen adaptation of Helldivers. Well, not anymore.
According to Deadline, Momoa has officially exited Helldivers, the upcoming movie based on the hugely popular PlayStation franchise. I am sure there is much more to this as the reason for his departure remains a mystery. Also neither Sony nor Momoa’s representatives have offered an explanation.
Now before anyone starts sounding the emergency alarm on Super Earth, the project itself isn’t in trouble. It is far from it. The film is still moving forward under director Justin Lin, the filmmaker best known for helping turn the Fast & Furious franchise into a globe-trotting spectacle of impossible stunts and family speeches. And this in itself says that there is no trouble on the horison. Sony is now searching for a new lead to replace Momoa in the role he originally planned to play.
But you have to admit that the timing is a little surprising.
I mean it was only a few months ago, when Lin spoke enthusiastically about the project and praised Momoa’s involvement. In fact, he argued that few actors could capture the unique mix of action, satire, and chaos quite like Momoa. The games mix explosive action with satire, absurd patriotism, and plenty of dark humour. Lin believed Momoa brought exactly the right mix of action, humour, and attitude to the role. Now the production faces the challenge of finding a replacement.
If you’ve somehow missed the Helldivers craze, the games throw players into the middle of a galactic war where elite soldiers battle alien threats in the name of “Super Earth.” What follows is a chaotic co-op experience full of explosions, bad decisions, and enough friendly fire incidents to start a second war. Underneath all of that, however, sits a sharp parody of militarism and propaganda that has helped the franchise build a fiercely loyal fanbase. The movie remains scheduled for release on 10 November 2027. Justin Lin is still directing, and Sony appears committed to pushing ahead despite losing its biggest star.
As for Momoa, don’t expect him to be unemployed anytime soon. The actor continues to keep one foot planted firmly inside every major franchise Hollywood can find. He recently scored a massive hit with A Minecraft Movie, will appear as Lobo in Supergirl, and is also set to return as Duncan Idaho in the next Dune film. The real question now is who Sony can find to fill those boots. Because replacing Jason Momoa is a bit like replacing a wrecking ball. Sure, you can do it. But people are definitely going to notice.
